Shipping Container Buyers Guide
The Ultimate Shipping Container Buyer’s Guide
Buying a shipping container is a significant investment. At Universal Container Depot, we believe transparency is the key to a successful purchase. Whether you’re looking for secure storage, transportation, or a custom container project, this guide covers everything you need to know before purchasing your shipping container.
1. Understanding Shipping Container Grades
Not all shipping containers are created equal. We categorize our inventory into three primary grades to help you choose the right balance of price, condition, and durability.
One-Trip (New)
Condition: Manufactured overseas and shipped to the United States only once.
Best For: Homes, offices, retail spaces, premium storage, and long-term investments.
Expect: Excellent paint, minimal dents, clean interiors, and easy-to-operate cargo doors.
Cargo Worthy (CW)
Condition: Structurally inspected and certified for international cargo transportation.
Best For: International shipping, commercial use, industrial storage, and export.
Expect: Structurally sound shipping containers with cosmetic wear from previous service.
Wind & Watertight (WWT)
Condition: Guaranteed free from holes or leaks.
Best For: Residential storage, farms, workshops, construction sites, and general storage.
Expect: Surface rust and dents may be present, but every shipping container has a dry, weather-resistant interior and is inspected before delivery.
2. Choosing the Right Shipping Container Size
Shipping Container Type | Exterior Dimensions (L × W × H) | Maximum Payload |
|---|---|---|
20ft Standard | 20’ × 8’ × 8’6” | Approximately 62,000 lbs |
40ft Standard | 40’ × 8’ × 8’6” | Approximately 59,000 lbs |
40ft High Cube | 40’ × 8’ × 9’6” | Approximately 63,000 lbs |
Pro Tip: If you plan to add insulation, electrical systems, shelving, or a finished ceiling, we recommend choosing a 40ft High Cube shipping container for the additional 12 inches of interior height.
3. Site Preparation & Delivery Requirements
Proper preparation is essential for a smooth delivery. Universal Container Depot uses professional delivery equipment that requires adequate access to safely place your shipping container.
Surface: The ground should be level and firm. Gravel, concrete, asphalt, or compacted earth are recommended.
Linear Clearance: Allow approximately 60 feet of straight-line clearance for a 20ft shipping container and approximately 100 feet for a 40ft shipping container.
Vertical Clearance: Ensure there are no overhead power lines or tree branches. A minimum of 14 feet of vertical clearance is recommended.
4. Our 5-Point Shipping Container Inspection
To ensure every shipping container meets the Universal Container Depot Standard, every unit undergoes a detailed inspection before delivery.
- Floor Integrity – Marine-grade plywood flooring is inspected for strength and structural integrity.
- Door Seals – Door gaskets are inspected to ensure a weather-tight seal.
- Locking Hardware – Hinges, locking rods, and handles are tested for smooth operation.
- Structural Condition – Walls, corner posts, and frame are inspected for major damage or structural defects.
- Roof Integrity – The roof is inspected to ensure it is solid, weather-resistant, and free of leaks.
5. Transparent Pricing & Logistics
We believe shipping container pricing should be simple, transparent, and honest.
Free Standard Shipping: Eligible shipping container orders include free standard delivery throughout the contiguous 48 United States.
No Hidden Fees: Eligible orders include the shipping container, standard delivery, and professional off-loading.
Clear Communication: Any special delivery requirements or additional logistics costs will always be discussed before payment is completed.
6. The Universal Container Depot Guarantee
We proudly stand behind every shipping container we sell.
Every eligible shipping container includes our 30-Day Structural Guarantee. If a covered structural issue is discovered within the first 30 days after delivery, our team will work with you to repair or replace the shipping container in accordance with our warranty policy.
